The short answer

Price the Smallest Useful Website

The useful number is not the cheapest launch price. It is the cost of building the right customer journey, connecting the required systems and owning something the business can operate.

Price the Website's Real Job

A five-page service website, a catalogue with thousands of variants and a customer portal are all called websites. They are not comparable projects. Before asking for a price, define the commercial action, the important page types and the systems involved after somebody clicks.

A low quote can be accurate for a narrow brochure site. It becomes expensive when the missing work appears as change requests, manual admin or a rebuild. A larger quote can also be poor value if it contains workshops, animations and retainers that do not improve the result.

  • Information architecture and content scope
  • Visual and interaction design
  • Frontend and backend engineering
  • Integrations, migration and data
  • Testing, launch and ongoing ownership

What changes the development cost

Template reuse lowers design and engineering time. Custom components, accounts, permissions, pricing logic, search, ecommerce and CRM workflows add real work because each state has to be designed, built and tested.

Content matters too. A quote that assumes finished copy and images is different from one covering keyword research, interviews, writing, migration and media production. Ask suppliers to state those assumptions rather than burying them in a page count.

  • Number and variety of templates
  • Custom data and user roles
  • Third-party APIs and payment flows
  • Legacy URL and content migration
  • Accessibility, performance and browser coverage

Budget for ownership, not dependency

Hosting, domain, licences, maintenance and support sit outside the initial build. The proposal should name who owns the domain, repository, analytics accounts, design files and production access. It should also explain how updates are requested and what happens if the relationship ends.

For an existing site, include SEO migration work. A redirect map, production crawl and Search Console checks cost less than trying to reconstruct lost landing pages after launch.

  • Ask for inclusions and exclusions
  • Separate build cost from recurring cost
  • Define acceptance tests
  • Record ownership and handover
  • Keep a contingency for discovered legacy issues

How to compare website quotes

Put each quote against the same requirement. Compare the page types, journeys, integrations, content responsibility, technical SEO, testing and handover. A single total without those details is not comparable evidence.

The strongest supplier may reduce the scope. That is often a better signal than somebody agreeing to every feature before understanding who will use it.
